Uptown Marysville Receives $400,000 Downtown Revitalization Grant!
December 3, 2008 - Marysville, Ohio
The City of Marysville, partnering with the Union County Chamber of Commerce and the Uptown Renewal Team, received a $400,000 downtown revitalization grant through the Comprehensive Downtown Revitalization Program. “This grant will lead to approximately $5.1 million in investment” stated Mayor Chris Schmenk.
Marysville was one of six communities to receive a grant. The city competed against nine other communities including Celina, Chillicothe, Fostoria, Geneva, Marion, Montpelier, Piqua, Whitehouse and Williard. “This program is very competitive and we are thrilled to have been selected” stated Mayor Chris Schmenk.
The grant will be utilized for a building improvement program consisting of approximately $170,000 in streetscape improvements, $170,000 in building improvements, and $60,000 for grant administration. Building improvements will be made to twenty-six buildings in Uptown Marysville. Improvements range from new roofs, windows, façade replacement, ADA and code compliance. “This could have significant impact on the aesthetics and economic viability of Uptown Marysville” stated Jim Cox, Chairman of Uptown Renewal Team.
The main objective of the CDRP is to assist in the revitalization of Central Business Districts and aid in the elimination of slums or blight. Under the CDRP, there are three “Tier” programs. The City of Marysville and the Uptown Renewal Team received a Tier One grant in 2005 in the amount of $15,000. The grant was used for developing the Marysville Uptown Revitalization Plan and Marketing Study. This year, the City of Marysville will receive the maximum grant allowed under the Tier Two Program.
The CDRP Explained...
What is the Downtown Revitalization Program? The City of Marysville applied to the Ohio Department of Development for funding under the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Competitive Downtown Revitalization Program (Tier II) for Downtown Building and Streetscape Revitalization. Now that the grant has been awarded, Marysville receives $400,000 that will be used to fund the Downtown Revitalization Program and other infrastructure improvements.
Proposed Grant Distribution:
- $170,000 for infrastructure improvements (E. Fifth Street)
- $170,000 for building and facade improvements (matching grants)
- $60,000 for program administration (Grant Coordinator)
How does this matter to Uptown Building and Business Owners? Beginning in the Spring of 2009, the City of Marysville will establish a matching grant program that will partially fund improvements to buildings in the Uptown District. Currently, there are twenty-six projects slated to receive matching grants. Building projects were solicited during the late summer and early autumn 2008.
What is the next step? Building and business owners that have already committed to the downtown revitalization project will have the first opportunity to apply for matching grant funds. These building and business owners will be contacted via mail and then asked to attend an important meeting during the first quarter (January through March) of 2009. It is extremely important that no projects begin until approval is sought from the City of Marysville. Projects begun beforehand will be ineligible to receive funding. Once the City is ready to proceed (most likely in April or May 2009), a project liason will contact each building or business owner participating in the program.
What if you missed out on the program? If you own a property in Uptown Marysville and did not originally agree to participate in the program, it is strongly encouraged that you contact Greg DeLong, City of Marysville, by calling 645-1034. Although projects committed during the summer and autumn of 2008 will take first preference, there may be opportunity for new projects to join the program. If so, projects will be funded "first come, first served" - so it is important that you contact Greg DeLong as soon as possible.
All questions should be forwarded to either Jason Stanford (Chamber of Commerce) at 937-642-6279, or Greg DeLong (City of Marysville) at 937-645-1034.
